A Pain Flare Plan is a document you create ahead of time with a list of tools to support you in navigating your next pain flare. 
 

WHY MAKE A PAIN FLAIR PLAN?

 

During a pain flare, our prefrontal cortex (the planning part of our brain) tends to go offline. We move into our survival brain, and this usually means we go right into panic. We forget how to help ourselves. 
 
We forget all the tools we have in our toolbox. We forget all the thoughts we’d like to be able to think that would bring us more calm and safety. So, we do this ahead of time. We create a list of everything we’d like to remember we have access to in order to soothe us for when the flare hits. 
 
Having this written plan will make any flare you experience in the future not only less scary, but helps you use tools to reduce the intensity, and frequency of your flares over time.
